Our Education Work

Schools SRE Framework

The framework aims to promote a holistic approach to sexual health and relationships through the provision of clear and user friendly guidelines, curricular programmes and classroom resources. It is designed to be practical and informative, providing a clear framework within which teachers, and others working in schools, can build an effective sexual health and relationships programme. It is hoped the SRE Framework will help raise the confidence of those teaching in schools and lead to a high quality, consistent educational experience for children and young people.

Background to the SRE Framework

This document is the result of joint efforts involving the four Lothian local authorities, NHS Lothian and Healthy Respect. It is endorsed by the Director of Children and Families in Edinburgh, the Directors of Education for the other three Lothian authorities and the Chief Executive of NHS Lothian. Contributions to the writing of the document have been made by teachers and health promotion specialists with experience of delivering SRE in schools. It has been produced in response to the many requests from professionals in schools for more detailed guidance on what should be delivered as part of a comprehensive programme of sexual health and relationships education.

Intended Audience

The SRE Framework has been provided free of charge to all schools: Nursery, Primary, Secondary, Special and Independent schools across Lothian. It has also been sent to a range of agencies and professionals working in partnership to deliver sexual health and relationships education, and can be adapted for use in other settings, such as young people’s units, youth work and further education. It is intended to appeal to all teachers, whatever their level of experience. Work is also beginning, in partnership with the Scottish Catholic Education Service, to develop the framework to make it appropriate for use in Catholic schools. The SRE Framework is a pilot being tested in Lothian as part of Healthy Respect’s work. The next step will be to roll it out across Scotland through collaboration with Learning Teaching Scotland.
